The Houston Roughnecks, determined to turn their season around, delivered a gritty performance in Week 4 of the United Football League (UFL) 2024 season, securing a hard-fought 17-9 victory over their in-state rivals, the Arlington Renegades. The win marked the Roughnecks’ first of the season and elevated them to the third seed in the USFL Conference.

Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm early in the game, with the Renegades managing to take a 3-0 lead late in the first quarter on a 31-yard field goal. However, the Roughnecks’ defense stepped up, with cornerback Kiondre Thomas intercepting a pass on the Houston 8-yard line to halt Arlington’s scoring drive.

As the second quarter unfolded, the Roughnecks found their footing, with running back Mark Thompson’s 12-yard run on 4th-and-1 setting the stage for a 25-yard field goal that tied the game at 3-3. Houston’s offense continued to click, with quarterback Reid Sinnett orchestrating a drive that culminated in a 3-yard touchdown reception by wide receiver Emmanuel Butler. Tight end Braedon Bowman’s successful 2-point conversion gave the Roughnecks an 11-3 lead heading into halftime.

The Roughnecks carried their momentum into the second half, with Sinnett spreading the ball around to various receivers, including Justin Hall, Braedon Bowman, Woody Brandom, and Keke Chism. The efficient passing game set up running back Mark Thompson’s 10-yard touchdown run, extending Houston’s lead to 17-3.

The Renegades refused to go down without a fight, responding with a touchdown by former Roughnecks wide receiver Deontay Burnett to bring the score to 17-9. However, the Roughnecks’ defense stood tall, forcing multiple punts and ultimately sealing the victory with a fumble recovery by middle linebacker Gabriel Sewell in the final seconds of the game.

Houston’s balanced offensive attack and stout defensive performance were the keys to their success. Quarterback Reid Sinnett connected with nine different receivers, showcasing his ability to spread the ball around and keep the Renegades’ defense on their toes. Wide receiver Cyril Grayson led the team with 62 receiving yards, while Emmanuel Butler and Mark Thompson each found the end zone.

On the defensive side of the ball, strongside linebacker J.T. Tyler led the way with five solo tackles and eight total tackles. Defensive ends Ethan Westbrooks and Chris Odom each recorded a sack, applying consistent pressure on the Renegades’ quarterback.

The Roughnecks’ victory came at a crucial time, as they entered Week 4 as one of only two winless teams in the league, alongside the Renegades. The win not only boosted morale but also positioned Houston as a potential contender in the USFL Conference.

Looking ahead, the Roughnecks face a daunting challenge in Week 5 as they host the undefeated Birmingham Stallions, who have established themselves as the team to beat in the UFL. The Stallions boast a perfect 4-0 record and have been dominant on both sides of the ball, ranking first in scoring offense and defense through the first three weeks of the season.

To pull off the upset, the Roughnecks will need to build upon the momentum gained from their victory over the Renegades. The offense must continue to find ways to involve multiple playmakers, while the defense will be tasked with slowing down the Stallions’ high-powered attack.

As the UFL season progresses, the Houston Roughnecks have shown that they have the resilience and talent to compete with any team in the league. With their first win under their belts and a renewed sense of confidence, the Roughnecks will look to make a statement against the Stallions and prove that they are a force to be reckoned with in the UFL.
