The D.C. Defenders emerged victorious in a hard-fought battle against the San Antonio Brahmas, securing an 18-12 win in front of their home crowd at Audi Field. The Week 6 matchup had significant playoff implications, with both teams vying for position at the top of the XFL Conference standings.
Despite a record-breaking performance by Brahmas running back John Lovett, who rushed for a UFL-best 153 yards on 23 carries, the Defenders’ defense stood tall when it mattered most. The win allowed D.C. to avenge an earlier loss to San Antonio in the opening week of the season and improve their record to 3-3 (2-2 XFL), while the Brahmas fell to 4-2 (2-2 XFL).
The game started as a defensive struggle, with the only points in the first half coming from a 43-yard field goal by Brahmas kicker Ryan Santoso and a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Defenders running back Cam’Ron Harris. The Defenders took a 6-3 lead into halftime, with the two-point conversion attempt failing.
In the third quarter, D.C. extended their lead to 9-3 on a 54-yard field goal by kicker Matthew McCrane. However, the Brahmas responded with a 2-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Quinten Dormady to Lovett, tying the game at 9-9 heading into the final quarter.
The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading field goals. McCrane connected on a 58-yarder to give the Defenders a 12-9 lead, only for Santoso to answer with a 40-yard field goal, knotting the score at 12-12 with 7:27 left to play.
The decisive moment came with just over five minutes remaining, as Defenders quarterback Jordan Ta’Amu found wide receiver Kelvin Harmon for a 13-yard touchdown, putting D.C. ahead 18-12. The Defenders’ defense held strong in the final minutes, securing the crucial victory.
Ta’Amu finished the game 14-of-22 for 179 yards and the game-winning touchdown, while Harmon led the Defenders’ receiving corps with 101 yards and the decisive score. Running back Darius Hagans had a breakout performance, rushing for 63 yards on 13 attempts, averaging an impressive 4.8 yards per carry.
For the Brahmas, Dormady completed 16-of-26 passes for 70 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Tight end Cody Latimer was the team’s leading receiver with 35 yards on six catches, while linebacker Jordan Williams led the defense with 10 tackles.
The Defenders’ defense, despite allowing 200 rushing yards, showcased their resilience by not allowing a single rushing touchdown. They also excelled in the red zone, converting two of their three opportunities.
Kicker Matthew McCrane played a crucial role for the Defenders, making two of his three field goal attempts, including impressive kicks from 54 and 58 yards out. His only miss came from 56 yards.
With the win, the Defenders solidified their position in the playoff race and extended their home winning streak. The Brahmas, despite the loss, remain in contention for a postseason berth, thanks in part to their dominant running game and stout defense.
Looking ahead, the Defenders will continue their homestand in Week 7, hosting the Michigan Panthers and their popular kicker Jake Bates. The Brahmas, meanwhile, will hit the road once again to face the Houston Roughnecks, who have struggled to find their footing this season.
As the UFL reaches its midway point, the competition for playoff spots is heating up, with every game carrying significant weight. The Defenders and Brahmas have both demonstrated their ability to compete at a high level, and their Week 6 clash served as a thrilling reminder of the excitement and drama that the UFL has to offer.
