The Michigan Panthers emerged victorious in a nail-biting 28-27 win over the Arlington Renegades at Ford Field, thanks to the clutch performance of kicker Jake Bates. With the win, the Panthers improved to 4-2 (2-1 USFL) and secured back-to-back victories for the first time this season, while the Renegades fell to 0-6 (0-3 XFL) and remained winless.
Bates, who has been a consistent bright spot for the Panthers this season, delivered yet another game-winning field goal as time expired. His 42-yard kick capped off a perfect 5-for-5 performance on the day, which included a remarkable 60-yard field goal to close out the first half. This marks the third time this season that Bates has connected from 60+ yards, further cementing his status as one of the league’s most reliable kickers.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead on their opening drive, with quarterback Danny Etling finding wide receiver Siaosi Mariner for a 9-yard touchdown pass. Running back Wes Hills added a one-point conversion, giving Michigan a 7-0 advantage. The Renegades responded with a 39-yard field goal by kicker Jonathan Garibay, cutting the deficit to 7-3.
After trading field goals, the Renegades took their first lead of the game in the second quarter, as running back Dae Dae Hunter found the end zone on a 12-yard run. Quarterback Luis Perez connected with wide receiver Deontay Burnett for a successful two-point conversion, putting Arlington ahead 11-10.
The Renegades extended their lead late in the first half when Perez connected with tight end Sal Cannella for a 19-yard touchdown pass. However, Bates’ 60-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter brought the Panthers within four points, making it a 17-13 game at halftime.
In the second half, the Panthers’ defense stepped up, forcing a three-and-out on Arlington’s first possession. Michigan capitalized on the momentum, with Bates drilling a 29-yard field goal to cut the Renegades’ lead to 17-16.
Arlington responded with a 14-yard rushing touchdown by wide receiver JaVonta Payton, followed by a successful one-point conversion by running back De’Veon Smith, extending their lead to 24-16. However, the Panthers refused to go away, with Bates connecting on a 49-yard field goal to bring Michigan within five points.
The turning point of the game came when the Panthers’ defense stuffed Smith on a critical 4th-and-1 play, giving Michigan the ball at midfield. Etling then showcased his dual-threat abilities, scrambling for a 40-yard gain to set up a 3-yard touchdown run by Hills. Despite failing to convert the two-point attempt, the Panthers took a 25-24 lead.
With under a minute remaining, Garibay connected on a 48-yard field goal to give the Renegades a 27-25 lead. However, a clutch 45-yard kick return by Marcus Simms, coupled with a facemask penalty on Arlington, set the stage for Bates’ game-winning heroics.
Etling finished the game 16-of-28 for 202 yards and a touchdown, while also leading the team in rushing with 55 yards on seven attempts. Perez, who entered the game as the league leader in passing yards, was held to just 180 yards on 24-of-37 passing, with one touchdown and no interceptions.
The Panthers’ defense played a crucial role in the victory, limiting Perez’s effectiveness and coming up with key stops when it mattered most. Defensive ends Ron’Dell Carter and Walter Palmore each recorded sacks, while the secondary, led by safety Kai Nacua, held firm against the Renegades’ passing attack.
With the win, the Panthers improved to 3-1 at home and kept pace in the competitive USFL Conference. The Renegades, meanwhile, will look to regroup and find a way to secure their first win of the season when they face the Memphis Showboats in Week 7.
As the UFL season approaches its midway point, the Michigan Panthers have established themselves as a force to be reckoned with, thanks in large part to the steady play of Etling, the explosive abilities of their skill position players, and the clutch performances of Bates. With a crucial matchup against the D.C. Defenders looming in Week 7, the Panthers will look to continue their winning ways and solidify their position in the playoff race.
The Arlington Renegades, despite another heartbreaking loss, showed flashes of potential throughout the game. Perez’s leadership and the emergence of playmakers like Hunter, Payton, and Cannella provide hope for the future, as the Renegades continue to search for their elusive first victory.
As the UFL continues to deliver thrilling finishes and showcase the talents of its players, fans can expect more exciting moments and unforgettable performances in the weeks to come. The Michigan Panthers and Arlington Renegades have both demonstrated their ability to compete at a high level, and their Week 6 clash served as a testament to the parity and competitiveness that define the league.
