Week 7 of the United Football League (UFL) 2024 season features a marquee matchup between the St. Louis Battlehawks (5-1, 3-0 XFL) and the Birmingham Stallions (6-0, 3-0 USFL) at Protective Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama. This highly anticipated clash pits two of the league’s top teams against each other in a battle for supremacy and early positioning in the race for the playoffs.
The Battlehawks enter the game riding a five-game winning streak, coming off a dominant 22-6 victory over the Houston Roughnecks in Week 6. St. Louis’ balanced offensive attack, led by quarterback A.J. McCarron and wide receiver Hakeem Butler, has been firing on all cylinders, averaging 28.2 points per game during their winning streak.
McCarron has been the steady hand guiding the Battlehawks’ offense, completing 67.5% of his passes for 1,290 yards, 12 touchdowns, and just one interception on the season. His ability to spread the ball around to his talented receiving corps, including Butler, who has emerged as a true game-breaker with four touchdowns and an average of 21.7 yards per catch, has made the Battlehawks’ passing game a force to be reckoned with.
On the ground, the Battlehawks have also been effective, with running backs Jacob Saylors and Wayne Gallman II providing a powerful one-two punch. Saylors, who has rushed for 330 yards and three touchdowns on the season, has showcased his versatility as a receiver out of the backfield, while Gallman has been a reliable goal-line option, finding the end zone twice in the last three games.
Defensively, the Battlehawks have been opportunistic, forcing multiple turnovers in each of their last three games. Linebacker Pita Taumoepenu has been a pass-rushing menace, registering a team-leading 4.0 sacks, while cornerback Brandon Sebastian and safety Kam Kelly have been ballhawks in the secondary, combining for five interceptions on the season.
The Birmingham Stallions, meanwhile, have been the epitome of dominance in the UFL this season, boasting an undefeated record and outscoring their opponents by an average of 18.5 points per game. The Stallions’ success can be attributed to their well-rounded roster, which features standout performers on both sides of the ball.
Quarterback Adrian Martinez has been a revelation for the Stallions, completing 64.8% of his passes for 1,335 yards, 12 touchdowns, and just two interceptions. His dual-threat abilities have kept defenses on their toes, as he also leads the team in rushing with 405 yards and four touchdowns on the ground.
The Stallions’ receiving corps is equally impressive, with tight end Jace Sternberger and wide receivers Marlon Williams and Deon Cain providing reliable targets for Martinez. Sternberger leads the team with four touchdown receptions, while Williams and Cain have combined for 825 receiving yards and five scores.
On defense, the Stallions have been a force to be reckoned with, allowing a league-low 14.5 points per game. The front seven, led by linebacker Mark Gilbert and defensive end Jeremy Bonner, has been stout against the run and has generated consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks, registering 21 sacks on the season.
As the Battlehawks and Stallions prepare to face off in Week 7, the stakes couldn’t be higher. For St. Louis, a victory would not only extend their winning streak to six games but also solidify their position as a top contender in the XFL Conference. For Birmingham, a win would keep their perfect record intact and further establish their dominance in the UFL.
With both teams featuring high-powered offenses and stingy defenses, fans can expect a hard-fought battle filled with explosive plays and game-changing moments. Will the Battlehawks’ balanced attack and opportunistic defense be enough to hand the Stallions their first loss of the season, or will Birmingham’s unrelenting dominance continue?
