ARLINGTON, Texas (May 11, 2024) – In a clash between the XFL’s Arlington Renegades and the USFL’s Memphis Showboats, it was the Renegades who delivered a resounding 47-23 victory in front of 8,042 fans at Choctaw Stadium.

The Renegades wasted no time setting the tone, marching down the field on their opening possession for a 9-yard Sal Cannella touchdown catch to take a 6-0 lead. After the Showboats briefly tied it at 6-3, Arlington took over.

Quarterback Luis Perez was masterful, going 27/32 for 296 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the offensive onslaught. He hooked up with JaVonta Payton twice for scores, while running back De’Veon Smith punched in a pair of 1-yard TD runs himself.

A pivotal moment came early in the second quarter when Tenny Adewusi intercepted Troy Williams and returned it 47 yards to set up Smith’s second TD and make it 22-3 Renegades. Arlington took a commanding 25-9 lead into halftime.

The second half was more of the same domination by the Renegades. Smith’s 101-yard rushing day highlighted the team’s first 100+ yard rushing performance this season as they built a 39-9 lead through three quarters.

Memphis finally showed some life when Williams scrambled for a 15-yard TD late in the third, but it was too little, too late. Joe Powell’s 51-yard pick-six early in the fourth pushed the Renegades ahead 47-17 and slammed the door.

The 47 points were a franchise record for the Renegades in their scoring outburst. Cannella had 9 catches for 72 yards and 2 TDs, while Payton totaled 82 yards and 2 scores as well.

Defensively, Arlington forced 4 turnovers, recorded 4 sacks, and got 8 tackles apiece from Ajene Harris and Lamont McPhatter to control the Memphis offense.

With the win, the Renegades improved to 2-6 on the season as they now turn their attention to a road matchup with the 4-2 San Antonio Brahmas next Sunday. The Showboats fell to 1-7 with the defeat.
