When the United Football League announced Chris Redman as the first head coach in Louisville Kings history, the decision was rooted in more than football experience. Redman brings elite quarterback pedigree, NFL championship experience, and deep ties to Louisville—making him a foundational figure for the franchise as it prepares for its inaugural 2026 season.

I think that there is a lot of promise in this selection and it feels very local focused. There is a caveat of him not coaching at this high of a level before but I am hopeful that his can bring some good local players to the team in the upcoming season.

A Louisville Native Returns Home

Chris Redman is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, and his appointment as head coach represents a full-circle moment. Before his professional career, Redman was a three-year starting quarterback at the University of Louisville, where he became one of the most accomplished players in program history.

During his collegiate career, Redman earned national recognition, including:

  • Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year (1999)
  • Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, given annually to the nation’s top senior quarterback
  • Induction into the University of Louisville Ring of Honor (2014)

As a senior, Redman completed 317 of 489 passes for 3,647 yards and 29 touchdowns, solidifying his legacy as one of Louisville football’s most productive quarterbacks. I remember hearing stories of what he could do while at Louisville. He is a Cards legend and a soon to be Kings legend as well.

NFL Career and Championship Experience

Chris Redman was selected in the third round (75th overall) of the 2000 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. As a rookie, he was part of the Ravens’ Super Bowl XXXV championship team, gaining early exposure to elite-level preparation and leadership.

Across nine NFL seasons, Redman played quarterback for:

  • Baltimore Ravens (2000–2003)
  • New England Patriots (2005)
  • Tennessee Titans (2005)
  • Atlanta Falcons (2007–2011)

His career spanned multiple organizations and systems, giving him firsthand experience with different coaching philosophies, locker room cultures, and offensive approaches.

Named Head Coach of the Louisville Kings

On December 30, 2025, the UFL officially named Chris Redman as head coach of the Louisville Kings. The announcement was made by UFL Co-owner Mike Repole and UFL President & CEO Russ Brandon, both of whom emphasized Redman’s leadership qualities and connection to the city.

Repole described Redman as “the perfect choice” and highlighted his role as a representative of Louisville’s identity and values. Brandon echoed that sentiment, pointing to Redman’s ability to combine his college and NFL experience with pride in his hometown to build a winning foundation.

Redman himself emphasized his commitment to Louisville, stating that the city is home and that he is focused on building both a roster and coaching staff with championship-level experience. We will see if he can do this in the upcoming draft and selection process.

What Chris Redman Brings to the Louisville Kings

Based on his documented career, Chris Redman brings several clear strengths to the Louisville Kings:

Quarterback Expertise

Redman’s background as a decorated college quarterback and longtime NFL signal-caller gives him deep insight into offensive execution, preparation, and decision-making.

Championship Perspective

As a Super Bowl champion with the Ravens, Redman understands what it takes to build and sustain a winning culture at the professional level.

Local Leadership

Few first-time head coaches enter a role with Redman’s connection to their city. His history with Louisville football positions him as both a leader inside the building and a recognizable figure for fans.

Credibility Across Levels

Redman’s experience spans college football honors, NFL competition, and now professional spring football leadership, giving him credibility with players entering the UFL from diverse backgrounds.

Building the Foundation of a New Franchise

As the first head coach in Louisville Kings history, Chris Redman is tasked with setting the tone for the franchise. His role extends beyond game planning to establishing culture, assembling a coaching staff, and shaping the identity of the team as it enters the UFL.

With deep roots in Louisville and experience at the highest levels of football, Redman stands as a central figure in the Kings’ effort to build a competitive and respected organization from day one. He is going to be the make or break of this team’s inaugural season.
