The Louisville Kings have added veteran linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin to their roster, bringing in a proven pass rusher with deep ties to the city. For Louisville fans, this move carries extra meaning. Mauldin is also a former standout at the University of Louisville.

From Cardinal Standout to Pro Defender
Mauldin made his name at Louisville as one of the most disruptive defensive players in the ACC. Playing under head coach Charlie Strong, he developed into a high-motor edge rusher known for his physicality and ability to pressure quarterbacks in big moments.
As a sophomore in 2012, he recorded 22 tackles and a team-leading 4.5 sacks. He finished his junior year with 40 tackles and 9.5 sacks. After this season, he was moved to linebacker, and according to ESPN, “Mauldin thrived in his new spot, earning first-team All-ACC honors from the coaches after notching a career-high 45 tackles, 6.5 sacks and a team-high 13 tackles for loss.”
He earned All-ACC honors and helped anchor a defense that was among the conference’s most physical units. His combination of speed off the edge and strength at the point of attack made him a consistent problem for opposing offenses.
Those performances led to him being selected in the 2015 NFL Draft.
Professional Experience and Spring Football Success
After entering the NFL, Mauldin gained valuable experience at the highest level before later finding major success in spring football. He revitalized his career with a dominant season in the CFL, leading the league with 17 sacks, and won the CFL’s Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award
That résumé gives the Kings a defender who has succeeded at every level: college, NFL, and spring professional football.
A Homecoming for Louisville
This signing feels like a full-circle moment. Mauldin built his reputation in Louisville as a Cardinal, and now he returns to the city as a professional player expected to make an immediate impact.
For the Kings, this move strengthens their pass defense (as well as run-stopping) and adds veteran leadership. For fans, it adds a familiar name with proven production and a history of making plays in Louisville.
If Mauldin can bring the same intensity and edge presence he showed during his college days, the Kings may have landed one of the most meaningful defensive additions of the season.
