The Birmingham Stallions continued their unbeaten run in the United Football League (UFL) 2024 season, securing a playoff spot with an impressive 39-21 victory over the Memphis Showboats at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The Stallions, now 6-0, showcased their dominance on both sides of the ball, forcing three turnovers and converting them into 14 points.

The game started with a promising drive by the Showboats, but a costly fumble by quarterback Case Cookus, forced by Stallions defensive end Jonathan Garvin, gave Birmingham their first possession at the Memphis 33-yard line. Despite the early setback, Memphis struck first, with Cookus finding tight end Sage Surratt for a 10-yard touchdown pass, putting the Showboats up 6-0.

However, the Stallions responded quickly, with running back Ricky Person Jr. capping a 75-yard drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. A successful two-point conversion pass from quarterback Adrian Martinez to tight end Jordan Thomas gave Birmingham an 8-6 lead, which they never relinquished.

Birmingham’s offense continued to click, with Martinez connecting with tight end C.J. Marable for a 4-yard touchdown pass, extending their lead to 16-6. Memphis managed to pull within seven points with a field goal, but a costly fumble by Cookus just before halftime led to another Stallions touchdown, as Martinez found wide receiver Marlon Williams for a 28-yard score, giving Birmingham a 22-9 lead at the break.

The Stallions pulled away in the second half, with Martinez showcasing his arm strength on an 80-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Austin Jr., pushing the lead to 31-12 by the end of the third quarter. Williams caught another touchdown pass from Martinez in the fourth quarter, giving Birmingham a commanding 39-12 advantage.

Memphis’ Dee Anderson provided a bright spot for the Showboats, hauling in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Troy Williams and catching a pass for the 3-point conversion, bringing the final score to 39-21.

Martinez had a stellar performance for the Stallions, completing 23 of 36 passes for 368 yards and four touchdowns. Person led the ground attack with 34 yards on 11 carries, while Austin recorded 108 yards receiving on four catches, including his 80-yard touchdown.

On the other side of the ball, the Showboats struggled to find consistency on offense. Cookus finished 15-for-23 for 115 yards and one touchdown but lost two fumbles. Williams, who replaced Cookus, went 6-of-13 for 65 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Daewood Davis led Memphis in receiving with five catches for 43 yards, while Darius Victor rushed for 42 yards on 11 carries.

With the victory, the Stallions extended their winning streak to thirteen games, dating back to last season, and secured their spot in the USFL Conference Championship game. The loss drops the Showboats to 1-5, with their lone win coming in Week 1 against the Houston Roughnecks.

As the UFL season progresses, the Birmingham Stallions have established themselves as the team to beat, with a potent offense led by Martinez and a stifling defense that forces turnovers and creates opportunities for their offensive counterparts. The Showboats, meanwhile, will need to regroup and address their inconsistencies on both sides of the ball if they hope to turn their season around and compete with the league’s top teams.

The UFL’s inaugural season continues to deliver exciting matchups and showcase the talent and competitiveness of its teams. With the Stallions securing their playoff berth and the Showboats looking to bounce back, fans can expect more thrilling games and memorable moments as the race for the postseason heats up.
