The St. Louis Battlehawks continued their winning ways in Week 6 of the United Football League (UFL) 2024 season, defeating the Houston Roughnecks 22-8 at The Dome at America’s Center. With this victory, the Battlehawks improved to 5-1, solidifying their position as one of the top contenders in the league.
The game started with a defensive battle, as both teams punted twice in the first quarter. The Battlehawks had an opportunity to strike first, but quarterback A.J. McCarron’s pass was intercepted in the end zone by Roughnecks safety Markel Roby, keeping the game scoreless.
However, the Battlehawks’ offense found its rhythm in the second quarter, putting together a 13-play scoring drive that culminated in a 17-yard touchdown pass from McCarron to wide receiver Hakeem Butler. The Battlehawks’ defense then made a crucial play late in the first half, with linebacker Mike Rose forcing a fumble by Roughnecks running back Mark Thompson, which was recovered by nose tackle Tautala Pesefea Jr.
The Battlehawks capitalized on the turnover, with McCarron connecting with Butler for a 32-yard completion, setting up a goal-line touchdown pass to wide receiver Steven Mitchell Jr. as time expired in the first half. The Battlehawks entered halftime with a commanding 14-0 lead, having out-gained the Roughnecks 185-62 in total yards.
The second half began with both teams trading punts, but the Roughnecks finally got on the board with a 12-play touchdown drive, capped off by a 16-yard run by Thompson on fourth-and-2. However, the Battlehawks’ defense stood tall on the ensuing drive, stuffing running back Jacob Saylors on a fourth-and-1 attempt from their own 49-yard line.
The Battlehawks put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter, with McCarron finding Butler once again for a 36-yard touchdown strike, extending their lead to 22-6. Butler’s performance in this game was just another example of his emergence as a true game-breaker for the Battlehawks this season. In Week 5, Butler had an 80-yard touchdown reception, the longest passing play in team history and the longest play of any kind in the UFL this season.
The Battlehawks’ defense was equally impressive, holding the Roughnecks to just 62 total yards in the first half and forcing a crucial turnover that led to points. Linebacker Pita Taumoepenu, who leads the team with 4.0 sacks this season, continued to be a force in the pass rush, while the secondary, led by safety Kameron Kelly and cornerback Brandon Sebastian, kept the Roughnecks’ passing game in check.
With this win, the Battlehawks have now won five straight games, showcasing their ability to win with a balanced offensive attack and a stingy defense. As the UFL season reaches its midway point, the Battlehawks have established themselves as one of the teams to beat, thanks in large part to the play of McCarron, Butler, and a defense that consistently creates turnovers and gets after the quarterback.
The Roughnecks, meanwhile, fall to 1-5 on the season and will need to regroup quickly if they hope to turn their season around. Despite the loss, there were some positive takeaways for Houston, including the play of Thompson, who scored the team’s lone touchdown and showed his ability to create yards after contact.
As the UFL continues to deliver exciting matchups and showcase the talents of its players, the Battlehawks have emerged as a true contender for the championship. With a balanced roster and a winning culture instilled by head coach Anthony Becht, St. Louis appears poised to make a deep run in the playoffs and potentially bring a UFL title back to the Gateway City.
